WORDPERFECT 5.1 for WINDOWS
This file provides information on how to run WordPerfect for Windows 5.1 on a
network file server. The information is divided into sections. Each section
addresses a different operating system.
Supported Networks
The definition of a supported network is: an operating system that supports
file locking that allows workstations running Windows to attach and use shared
resources. This does not include stations running OS/2. Currently the OS/2
DOS compatibility box cannot run Windows in Standard or Enhanced mode;
therefore, WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows will not be supported. IBM's new OS/2
2.0 is being marketed with the ability to launch Windows applications in
Standard mode. When OS/2 2.0 ships, this environment will be tested.
Supported also means that the operating system is available to WordPerfect
Corporation Developers and Testers in the WordPerfect Corporate Lab. While not
all the network operating systems that are supported appear on the list, many
of the network operating systems not on the list are, in part, similar to or
based on one or more of the network operating systems that do appear on this
list.
The following network operating systems are available for use with the /NT
environment variable:
0-Other
1-Novell Netware
2-Banyan Vines
3-TOPS Network
4-IBM LAN Network
4-IBM OS/2 LAN Server
4-Microsoft LAN Manager
4-Ungerman Bass LAN Manager
4-LANsmart
4-PC NOS
4-DNA
4-Invisible NET
5-Nokia PC-Net
6-3COM 3+
7-10NET
8-LANtastic
9-AT&T StarGROUP
A-DEC PCSA (Pathworks)
B-3COM 3+ OPEN
C-Banyan Streetalk
What if my network does not appear on the list of directly supported networks?
If the Microsoft Windows File Manager and Print Manager will allow you to see
and use the network's shared resources (drives and printers), then WordPerfect
Corporation will do all that it can to help you run WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows
on your network. All testing conducted in the WordPerfect Corporate Lab is done
with the latest current shipping release of the network operating system. If
you are not sure what your operating system most closely emulates, please call
the Network Customer Support number (800-228-6066) and they can identify a
correct emulation.
The following networks will not be directly supported due to circumstances
beyond our control. In many cases this means that the WordPerfect Corporate
Lab requested the latest current shipping release of the operating system and
it was not made available to us for testing and documentation.
Nexos
The following network operating systems are also available in the WordPerfect
Corporate Lab:
Netware Lite Emulation 4 - IBM LAN Network
CBIS Emulation 4 - IBM LAN Network
HP Office Share Emulation 4 - OS/2 LAN Manager
PCNFS Emulation 0 - Other
PowerLAN Emulation 4 - IBM LAN Network
MainLAN Emulation 4 - IBM LAN Network
General Concepts
Installation option #3 - NETWORK INSTALLATION
When you choose Option number 3 - Network, three directories are created on the
destination drive: WPWIN, WPC, WPCINI. The WPWIN directory is where executable
files are installed. The WPC directory is where the shared programs are
installed, and the WPCINI directory is where the user specific .INI and .SET
files are created and stored.
THE PATH
The WPC directory must be in the path. References to the WPWIN.EXE are handled
in the Properties of the WPWIN icon. References to the WPCINI directory are
made in the WPC_NET.INI as well as the WPWP_NET.INI. A common, unchanging
drive letter is essential to the successful installation and execution of WPWIN
on your network. The drive letter and subsequent path specifications are
written to INI files. If for any reason the drive letter is changed, all .INI
files must be edited to include this new drive letter.
SHARED RESOURCES
We suggest creating a shared resource (a destination drive) prior to running
the installation program. This is done by the system administrator. The
installation program will automatically create the program directories for you.
RIGHTS/PERMISSIONS
Users must have at least Read or Read and Open rights/permissions in the WPWIN
and the WPC directories. They must have all rights/permissions in the WPCINI
directory.
.SET - .INI - .ENV FILES
When a user executes WPWIN 5.1, a .SET and .INI file is created in the
directory specified in the environment file (WP{WP}.ENV). The .ENV file is a
text file that contains two lines of information. The first line identifies
the network type with the /NT switch. In the case where WPWIN is installed on
a Novell network, the first line of the .ENV file would read /NT-1. The second
line of the .ENV file identifies the path specification where users' .SET files
and .INI files are stored. These files (.SET and .INI) contain user specific
information that allows the user to customize the program to best meet their
individual needs.
TEMPORARY WORK DIRECTORIES AND FILES
When a user executes WPWIN 5.1, a temporary work directory is created and at
least four temporary files are created and written to this directory. The
WPWIN directory is the default directory. It is suggested that the work
directory be created somewhere other than off of the WPWIN directory. This can
be done with a startup option.
REDIRECTION COMMANDS AND STARTUP OPTIONS
The use of these startup options is integral to the successful implementation
of WPWIN 5.1 on your file server.
The /D startup option will redirect the creation of the user work directory and
temporary files to a specified location; SYNTAX: WPWIN.EXE /D-C:\TEMP. This
would force the work directory to be created and subsequent temporary files to
be created in the C:\TEMP directory. This startup option can be included in
the DOS environment via a SET command; SYNTAX: SET WPWIN=/D-C:\TEMP, or in the
file properties of the WPWIN icon itself; SYNTAX:
W:\WPWIN\WPWIN.EXE /D-:C\TEMP.
***** THE /PI and /NI OPTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN THE BETA II RELEASE *****
/PI Switch (Path to the Ini file)
The format of this switch is the same as the /PS (Path to the Set file) switch,
that is, "/PI-path". The path given is the location in which to look for the
WPC.INI file. If the WPC.INI file is not found in the specified path the
application program will continue to run, but there will be no retrieval of
information from nor storing of information to the WPC.INI file. If no /PI
switch is given, the program will look in the following directories:
The directory in which the application .EXE file resides
The Windows directory (containing WIN.COM)
The directories listed in the DOS PATH environment variable
The directories mapped in a network
If not found the program will continue to run, but will not have access to a
WPC.INI file.
This switch is only processed once, at the time when the first WPCORP
application starts. The switch may be located on the command line, in the
application specific DOS environment variable (e.g. "WPWIN" for WP 5.1 for
Windows), in the DOS environment variable "WPC", or in the application specific
.ENV file (e.g. "WP{WP}.ENV" for WP 5.1 for Windows).
/NI Switch (path to the Network Ini file)
The format of this switch is the same as the /PS (Path of the Set file) switch,
that is, "/NI-path". The path given is the location in which to look for the
WPC_NET.INI file. If the /NI switch is not given and the /PI switch is given,
the program will look for the WPC_NET.INI file in the location specified by the
/PI switch instead. If not found in these locations the program will look in
the following directories in the listed order:
The directory in which the application .EXE file resides
The Windows directory (containing WIN.COM)
The directories listed in the DOS PATH environment variable
The directories mapped in a network
If not found the program will continue to run, but will not have access to a
WPC_NET.INI file.
Like /PI, this switch is only processed once, at the time when the first WPCORP
application starts. The switch may be located on the command line, in the
application specific DOS environment variable (e.g. "WPWIN" for WP 5.1 for
Windows), in the DOS environment variable "WPWIN", or in the application
specific .ENV file (e.g. "WP{WP}.ENV" for WP 5.1 for Windows).
*******************************************************************************
Additional information can be obtained from the NETWORK.TXT file that Microsoft
includes with your copy of Windows. This file contains valuable information
about running Windows on your network.
Many of the network software companies currently supporting Windows have
additional information on how to configure Windows to run with their operating
system. This information may prove to be helpful in troubleshooting problems
specific to the operating system and windows.
NETWORK SPECIFIC HELPS & HINTS
The following section assumes that during the Installation, Option 3-NETWORK
for network install was chosen and the default directories were created.
NOVELL NETWARE
We suggest the system administrator map a search drive prior to beginning the
actual installation. This may mean creating a new directory structure and
mapping a new drive on the file server or simply mapping a new drive letter to
an existing structure. This search drive would then be made available to the
user following the installation and configuration of WPWIN 5.1.
After completing the installation, the system administrator must grant the
following rights in the following directories. This is can be done by using
SYSCON.
WPC Read, Open, Search (286) or Read, File Scan (386)
WPWIN Read, Open, Search (286) or Read, File Scan (386)
WPCINI All rights except Parental (286) or Supervisor, Access Control (386)
Since rights in the WPWIN directory are limited and users will be unable to
create temporary work directories or temporary files there, WPWIN will look for
one of the following DOS environment variables: the WINDOWS SET TEMP
environment variable and the SET WPWIN=/D-U: variable. If the SET TEMP
variable is present, WPWIN will create the work directory and place the
temporary files in that specified directory. If no SET TEMP environment
variable is available, the SET WPWIN=/D option is necessary. If WPWIN does not
detect one of these two variables and cannot create the temporary work
directories and temporary files, the user will see an error message, "Unable to
create work directory for work files". When the user clicks on the [OK]
button, they will receive another error message, "Cannot initialize - The most
probable reason is insufficient memory". When the user clicks on the [OK]
button, they will be returned to the Program Manager. In order to prevent
this, the /D variable can be used in the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT file or in the
LOGIN SCRIPT. If used in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, the following syntax is used:
SET WPWIN=/D-C:\TEMP. If used in the LOGIN SCRIPT, the following syntax must
be used: DOS SET WPWIN="/D-U:\USERS\%LOGIN_NAME". This will cause the
temporary work directory and temporary files to open in the user's home
directory on drive U:. Login scripts can be edited by using SYSCON.
The WPC directory must be in the path. It is suggested that a search drive be
mapped to the actual WPC directory. This will append the drive letter mapped
for the WPC directory to the existing path when the user logs in. It is not
necessary to map an additional search drive for the WPWIN directory if another
drive is mapped to the same volume as the WPC directory. This drive letter is
used when setting up the file properties. When setting the file properties for
the WPWIN icon, the path might read F:\WPWIN\WPWIN.EXE, provided WPC is
installed on the same volume as drive F:. If another drive is not available on
the same volume, an additional search drive is necessary for the WPWIN
directory. In this situation, a drive letter and path specification are not
necessary when setting the file properties; WPWIN.EXE and any startup options
are all that is required.
File Preferences - Location of Files: If you have specified in File Preferences
directories other than those created in the installation process for printers,
macros, and styles, make sure that you grant your users sufficient access to
these resources. The following is an example of what rights users may have in
the other program directories (this can be done by using SYSCON):
Backup Files All except Parental or Supervisor
Documents Files All except Parental or Supervisor
Graphic Files Read,Open,Search or Read,FileScan
Printer Files Read,Open,Search or Read,FileScan
Spread Sheets All except Parental or Supervisor
Macros/Keyboards/Button Bars All except Parental or Supervisor
Styles All except Parental or Supervisor
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (MAIN) Read,Open,Search or Read,FileScan
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (SUPP) All except Parental or Supervisor
NOTE: If the user access to the directory where printer files are stored is
limited to Read, Open, Search, users will be unable to make permanent changes
to the .PRS files. This includes Paper/Size/Type and Soft Font/Cartridge
information. If the system administrator would like users to have the ability
to make these changes, then all rights except Parental or Supervisor and Access
Control are necessary.
NETWORK PRINTING
Printing directly to the queue is unavailable. A capture command must be
issued either in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or LOGIN SCRIPT. The queue must be connected
to the local device in the Microsoft Windows Control Panel.

BANYAN VINES
NOTE: A Windows network driver was obtained from the manufacturer in order to
run Microsoft Windows correctly.
We suggest the system administrator create a shared resource prior to beginning
the actual installation. This may mean creating a new directory structure and
SET a drive to that directory on the file server and sharing it or simply
sharing an existing resource. This resource would then be made available to
the user following the installation and configuration of WPWIN. The
installation program will create the necessary directories for you.
After completing the installation, the system administrator must grant the
following permissions in the following directories. This is done with the
SETARL utility.
WPC READ or R
WPWIN READ or R
WPCINI MODIFY or M
The WPC and WPWIN directories must be in the path. The easiest way to do this
is in the Group or User Profile. Once the shared resource has been created and
the drive has been set, the path specifications to the WPC and WPWIN
directories can be added. It is suggested that this path information be added
to the Group Profile for easier management. If the shared resource for WPWIN
is set at drive W:, the following path specification would be added to the
PROFILE: W:\WPC;W:\WPWIN;. When the users login, this path information will be
appended to the existing path. When setting up the WPWIN icon, the only thing
necessary is WPWIN.EXE followed by any startup options. Editing user or group
profiles is done in the MANAGE utility.
File Preferences - Location of Files: If you have specified different
directories in File Preferences during the installation process for printers,
macros, and styles, make sure that you grant your users sufficient access to
these resources. The following is an example of what rights users may have in
the other program directories (this is done by using the SETARL utility):
Backup Files MODIFY or M
Documents Files MODIFY or M
Graphic Files READ or R
Printer Files READ or R
Spread Sheets MODIFY or M
Macros/Keyboards/Button Bars MODIFY or M
Styles MODIFY or M
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (MAIN) READ or R
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (SUPP) MODIFY or M
NOTE: If the user access to the directory where printer files are stored is
limited to READ, users will be unable to make permanent changes to the .PRS
files. This includes Paper/Size/Type and Soft Font/Cartridge information. If
the system administrator would like users to have the ability to make these
changes, MODIFY permissions are necessary.
Since rights in the WPWIN directory are limited and users will be unable to
create temporary work directories or temporary files there, WPWIN will look for
one of following DOS environment variables: the WINDOWS SET TEMP environment
variable and the SET WPWIN=/D-U: variable. If the SET TEMP variable is
present, WPWIN will create the work directory and place the temporary files in
that specified directory. If no SET TEMP environment variable is available,
the SET WPWIN=/D option is necessary. If WPWIN does not detect one of these two
variables and cannot create the temporary work directories and temporary
files, the user will see an error message, "Unable to create work directory for
work files". When the user clicks on the [OK] button, they will receive
another error message, "Cannot initialize - The most probable reason is
insufficient memory". When the user clicks on the [OK] button, they will be
returned to the dialogue box. The /D variable can be used in the user's
AUTOEXEC.BAT file or in the Group or User Profile. If used in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file, the following syntax is used: SET WPC=/D-C:\TEMP. If used in the
PROFILE, the following syntax may be used: SET WPC=/D-C:\. This will force the
temporary work directory and temporary files to open on the user's hard disk.
If necessary, the drive letter can be the user's home directory on the file
server. Editing user or group profiles is done in the MANAGE utility.
NETWORK PRINTING
There must be a printer redirection command executed from the Group or User
profile that attaches the workstations local device to the shared printer
resource. This device must be connected in Windows Printer Control to the
local device. The printer redirection command is setup and modified by using
the MANAGE utility.

will be added later. This is currently being tested and documented

IBM PC LAN
We suggest the system administrator create a shared resource prior to beginning
the actual installation. This may mean creating a new directory structure on
the file server and sharing it or simply sharing an existing resource. This
resource would then be made available to the user following the installation
and configuration of WPWIN. The installation program will create the necessary
directories for you. Shared resources can be created either at the file server
or by the system administrator by using the NET command menu by using the NET
utility.
After completing the installation, the system administrator must grant the
following permissions in the following directories on the WPWIN shared
resource. This is done by using the NET utility from the server or workstation
Dos prompt.
WPC READ
WPWIN READ,EXECUTE
WPCINI READ,WRITE,CREATE,DELETE
The WPC and WPWIN directories must be in the path. This can be done by editing
the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT. If the shared resource for WPWIN 5.1 is assigned to
drive W:, this shared resource must be added by including the necessary NET USE
command to make the resource available. If the shared resource for WPWIN is on
drive W: then the following path specification would be added to the existing
path: W:\WPC;W:\WPWIN;. When the user boots up, this resource will then be
available and references to the appropriate directories will appear in the
path. When setting up the WPWIN icon, the only thing necessary is WPWIN.EXE
followed by any startup options.
File Preferences - Location of Files: If you have specified different
directories in File Preferences during the installation process for printers,
macros, and styles, make sure that you grant your users sufficient access to

NETWORK PRINTING
There must be a printer redirection command executed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT that
attaches the workstation's local device to the shared printer resource. This

macros, and styles, make sure that you grant your users sufficient access to
these resources. The following is an example of what rights users may have in
the other program directories:
Backup Files READ,WRITE
Documents Files READ,WRITE
Graphic Files READ
Printer Files READ
Spread Sheets READ,WRITE
Macros/Keyboards/Button Bars READ,WRITE
Styles READ,WRITE
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphen(MAIN) READ
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphen(SUPP) READ,WRITE
NOTE: If the user's access to the directory where printer files are stored is
limited to READ, users will be unable to make permanent changes to the .PRS
files. This includes Paper/Size/Type and Soft Font/Cartridge information. If
the system administrator would like users to have the ability to make these
changes then READ and WRITE rights are necessary.
If WPWIN does not detect one of these two
variables and cannot create the temporary work directories and temporary files,
the user will see an error message, "Unable to create work directory for work
files". When the user clicks on the [OK] button, they will receive another
error message, "Cannot initialize - The most probable reason is insufficient
memory". When the user clicks on the [OK] button, they will be returned to the
dialogue box. The /D variable can be used in the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
The following syntax is used: SET WPC=/D-C:\TEMP. This will force the
temporary work directory and temporary files to open on the user's hard disk.
If necessary, the drive letter can be the user's home directory on the file
server.
NETWORK PRINTING
There must be a printer redirection command executed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT that
attaches the workstation's local device to the shared printer resource. This
device must be connected in Windows Printer Control to the local device before
WPWIN will print correctly. Redirection commands are managed from the file
server using the 3P Share utility from the server and 3P Link from the
workstation.

NOTE: A Windows network driver was obtained from the manufacturer in order to
run Microsoft Windows correctly.
We suggest that the system administrator create a shared resource prior to
beginning the actual installation. This may mean creating a new directory
structure on the file server and sharing it or simply sharing an existing
resource. This resource would then be made available to the user following the
installation and configuration of WPWIN. The installation program will create
the necessary directories for you.
After completing the installation the system administrator must grant the
following rights in the following directories. This can be done by using the
NET SHARE utility.
WPC READ
WPWIN READ
WPCINI READ,WRITE,CREATE
The WPC and WPWIN directories must be in the path. This can be done by editing
the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT. If the shared resource for WPWIN is assigned to drive
W: this shared resource must be added by including the necessary NET USE
command to make the resource available. If the shared resource for WPWIN is on
drive W:, then the following path specification would be added to the existing
path: W:\WPC;W:\WPWIN;. When the user boots up, this resource will then be
available and references to the appropriate directories will appear in the
path. When setting up the WPWIN icon, the only thing necessary is WPWIN.EXE
followed by any startup options.
File Preferences - Location Files: If you have specified in File Preferences
directories other than those created in the installation process for printers,
macros, and styles, make sure that you grant your users sufficient access to
these resources. The following is an example of what rights users may have in
the other application directories. This can be done by using the NET_MGR
utility:
Backup Files READ,WRITE,CREATE
Documents Files READ,WRITE,CREATE
Graphic Files READ
Printer Files READ
Spreadsheets READ,WRITE,CREATE
Macros/Keyboards/Button Bars READ,WRITE,CREATE

WPWIN READ,FILE LOOKUP,EXECUTE (R, L, E)
WPCINI ALL RIGHTS BUT P (P-physical access to devices)
The WPC and WPWIN directories must be in the path. This can be done by editing
the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT. If the shared resource for WPWIN is assigned to drive

Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (SUPP) All but P
Note: If the directories for WPWIN and WPC are left at LANtastic's default
(RWCMLDKNEAI), then the WPC and WPWIN files need to be attribed Read-only. If
the files are left attribed read-write then "Sharing violation on drive X:"
will occur.
If the user access to the directory where printer files are stored is limited
to READ and FILE LOOKUP, users will be unable to make permanent changes to the
.PRS files. This includes Paper/Size/Type and Soft Font/Cartridge information.
If the system administrator would like users to have the ability to make these
changes then ALL RIGHTS but A and P are necessary.

All network printing must be sent LPT2 or LPT3; only local printing should be
sent to LPT1. Share the server's printer resource with the net use command
(i.e., net use lpt2: \\servername\@printer). Invoke Windows and from the MAIN
group select Control panel, then the Printers option. Bypass the Windows
spooler by clearing the Use Printer Manager check box. From the Printer menu,
select your printer driver from the Installed Printers list and select the
Configure button. Highlight the redirected port from your choices (LPT2 or
LPT3). From the Printer Configuration window, set the timeouts of Device Not
Selected to 900 and Transmission Retry Timeout to 950.

DEC PCSA / Pathworks
NOTE: A Windows network driver was obtained from the manufacturer in order to
run Microsoft Windows correctly.
We suggest that the system administrator create a disk service area or use a
subdirectory of an existing disk service to hold the WPWIN and WPC directories.
This disk service area should be created according to DEC PCSA network
instructions. The disk service area must be mounted as read/write before the
WPWIN files are installed.
The installation process will create a file called WP{WP}.ENV (see General
Concepts above). Make sure the user .SET files are directed to a file service.
After completing the installation the system administrator should verify the
following directories are on the appropriate services:
WPC disk service
WPWIN disk service
WPCINI file service
Before remounting the disk service as read-only, the system administrator needs
to invoke WPWIN in order to create the .LCN file. This file contains the WPWIN
License Number. Remount the disk service area as read-only before individual
users access WPWIN.
The WPC and WPWIN directories must be in the path. This can be done by editing
the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT. If a new disk service was created for the WPWIN and
WPC directories, the commands to connect the users to that service must be
added to the users' AUTOUSER.BAT files. When setting up the WPWIN icon the
only thing necessary is WPWIN.EXE followed by any startup options.
File Preferences - Location of Files: If you have specified different
directories in File Preferences during the installation process for printers,
macros, and styles, make sure that you grant your users sufficient access to
these resources. The following is an example of the suggested locations for
these directories:
Backup Files file service
Documents file service
Graphic Files disk service
Printer Files file service
Spreadsheets file service
Macros/Keyboards/Button Bars file service
Styles file service
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (MAIN) disk service
Thesaurus/Speller/Hyphenation (SUPP) file service
NOTE: The Printer Files may be placed on the disk service but this will not
allow users to make permanent changes to the .PRS files. This includes Paper
Size/Type and Soft Font information. If the system administrator would like
users to have the ability to make these changes then the Printer Files should
be on the file service.
Since rights in the WPWIN directory are limited and users will be unable to
